Hoffenheim's cautious start in Crete costs the comeback
In Heraklion, TSG Hoffenheim initially displayed more possession and a higher press, but the early dominance did not turn into goals, while OFI Crete decided the match from few chances. The match was the first Europa League comeback for the Kraichgau side, which they ultimately lost.
Early chances and missed opportunities
The visitors from Hoffenheim started cautiously and allowed OFI Crete to keep the ball in the early phase, but the Greeks could not convert possession into a goal. After a well‑executed counter‑attack, Aitor put OFI ahead in the 30th minute, the first lead of the match. Despite the early deficit, the Hoffenheim team remained the better side as the game progressed, but they created truly dangerous chances too infrequently.
Adam Hlozek and Patrick Wimmer got shots that did not hit the target (34th/41st minute). The chances remained scarce, even though Hoffenheim dominated the midfield and significantly increased possession. Nevertheless, the finishing power was lacking to narrow the deficit.
Crete exploits the few chances
In the second half, Hoffenheim remained the dominant team, but the chances became increasingly rare. In the 61st minute, a misplaced pass in the Cretan setup could have led to an equaliser when Andrej Kramaric was in front of goal, but his shot was saved by keeper Nikos Christogeorgos.
The decisive goal came in the 84th minute, when Georgios Kanellopoulos headed the second goal after a corner from Borja González. That sealed the result and the Kraichgau side had to lose the match 0‑2.
The bitter poor start casts a shadow over the upcoming Europa League fixture on 15 October, when TSG Hoffenheim host the Turkish top‑team Besiktas Istanbul. OFI Crete will play their next match away against Stade Rennes.
The contrast between early possession and a lack of finishing quality shows that Hoffenheim, despite superiority in the flow of the game, lacks efficiency. The team must in future use the few chances they create more consistently to prevent further comebacks.
