Hoffenheim loses unexpectedly in Europa League start in Crete
In the stadium of OFI Crete, surrounded by around 20,000 loud spectators, TSG Hoffenheim had to finish their first Europa League match on Thursday with a defeat. Coach Christian Ilzer saw his team under pressure from the start, while the match marked the kickoff of the group stage.
First Half Drama
Patrick Wimmer, who was active until the 60th minute, created the best scoring chance for Hoffenheim in the first half. In the 15th minute defender Ozan Kabak headed the ball, which goalkeeper Nikos Christogeorgos saved confidently. Despite dominant possession phases, the team remained without a goal.
Greek Goals
The Greek guests from OFI Crete used their chances efficiently: Aitor Cantalapiedra made it 1-0 in the 30th minute, followed by Gergios Kanellopoulos in the 84th minute, who sealed the result definitively. Both goals were scored in front of an enthusiastic crowd of about 20,000 people.
Hoffenheim's Defensive Weakness
Goalkeeper Oliver Baumann had little to do in the first thirty minutes, but after a foul by Kenan Kodro on Albian Hajdari, the first concession came. The unimpeded attack ended with a pass from Hajdari, which helped Aitor to the opening goal. Baumann then remained without further chances.
In the second half Ilzer introduced fresh legs into the game: centre‑back Koki Machida came on, followed by Bambase Conte and experienced Andrej Kramaric after an hour. Later, Adam Daghim and Fisnik Asllani were substituted in to revive the attack.
Another highlight was the almost‑missed goal by Taxiarchis Fountas in the 53rd minute, which narrowly missed the equaliser. Finally, the “joker” Kanellopoulos sealed the result with his late goal.
Although TSG Hoffenheim recently displayed impressive performances in the German Bundesliga against top teams such as Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart, the match in Crete revealed a markedly weaker international form. The report comes from Reuters, reported by Louisa Gouliamaki.
