Hjulmand Flies as Atlético Secure €40m deal from Sporting CP

🇪🇸 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Atlético Madrid have secured Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand for €40 million plus add‑ons, a deal confirmed by Fabrizio Romano on July 9, and Hjulmand Flies to Madrid the same day to fill a defensive‑midfield void in Diego Simeone’s system and is expected to bolster the back four with his ball‑winning discipline.

Hjulmand arrived at Sporting CP from the Italian side Lecce in August 2023 on a contract running to 2028. He quickly became the defensive midfield spine under Rúben Amorim and subsequent coaches in Lisbon.

In the Liga Portugal his performances featured pressing intensity, high ball‑recovery numbers and an aerial presence at 1.85 m. Those attributes attracted consistent interest from clubs across Europe’s top five leagues before Atlético acted.

The €40 million fee, which Atlético Secure below the €80 million release clause, represents a negotiated discount. The agreement also includes undisclosed add‑ons and a new contract for Hjulmand until June 2031, giving Los Rojiblancos five years of security.

Diego Simeone’s system demands midfielders who can win the ball, shield the back four and endure the physical load of a Europa League and La Liga double. Hjulmand’s profile of defensive solidity and positional discipline is a Classic Simeone Profile that leaves little mystery about the signing.

After the agreement was confirmed, the immediate focus shifts to his medical examination and formal signing. He will join training at the Metropolitano once paperwork is completed, and What Comes Next for Hjulmand will be how Simeone integrates him and the impact on existing midfield options.
