Havertz and Nagelsmann demand change after Germany's penalty heartbreak

🇬🇧
Arsenal striker Kai Havertz and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed deep disappointment after Germany fell in a penalty shootout to Paraguay at the World Cup, with Havertz apologising to supporters and Nagelsmann insisting he will remain unless the federation no longer wants him. Havertz said, "I have not much to say. I'm speechless. This is my second World Cup and we have messed it up for the second time," speaking to German television. The quote underscored the player’s frustration with the tournament outcome. He added, "The only thing I can say is: sorry. We are all disappointed. We had big plans this year. To disappoint again is not a good feeling," addressing the nation. Havertz’s apology highlighted the collective let‑down felt by the squad. Nagelsmann stated, "I am ready and want to prepare for the Euro and Nations League. If I'm no longer wanted, then we must talk about it," indicating his willingness to stay. The coach linked his future to the confidence of the technical staff. Germany took the lead in extra time through Jonathan Tah, but the goal was ruled out for an alleged foul, a decision that sparked controversy. The disallowed goal left the match level before the penalty shootout. Nagelsmann described the decision as "ridiculous" and acknowledged that even without the goal, the team fell short, expressing sympathy for fans in the stadium and at home. His comments reflected both disappointment and empathy. Havertz, who also featured at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, recalled that tournament also ended in a major disappointment for Germany. The repeat of a failed campaign underscores the frustration within the squad.
