Harry Winks’ Italian escape route: Cagliari’s midfield gamble

🇬🇧

Leicester City’s Harry Winks is closing in on a move to Serie A side Cagliari as the Sardinian club push ahead with their midfield overhaul. Cagliari have already completed the signing of Alessandro Romano but remain focused on adding further quality in the middle of the park, with Gianluca Gaetano expected to leave the club.

Alfredo Pedulla Winks has unexpectedly emerged as a primary target for Cagliari, with the Italian outfit drawn to the midfielder’s profile. The Foxes’ relegation to League One last season has accelerated the need for squad restructuring, and Leicester have now given the green light for Winks to leave.

With his contract at Leicester set to expire in 2027, Winks is free to explore options ahead of time. Cagliari and the player’s representatives are currently engaged in wage negotiations, while both clubs continue discussions over the transfer structure. The likelihood of a deal taking shape is growing, with Winks set to embark on a second stint in Italy after his brief spell at Sampdoria four years ago.

Once regarded as English football’s next big hope, Winks delivered standout European performances during his time at Tottenham. His career trajectory has not matched those early expectations, but a move to Cagliari could offer him a chance to revive his top-flight prospects and reignite his career. The Sardinian club have outlined an ambitious project since last season, and Winks’ experience could prove pivotal in taking that vision forward.

Cagliari’s midfield reshuffle appears to hinge on Winks’ availability, with Gaetano’s impending departure creating a clear pathway for the Englishman’s arrival.
