Hansi Flick explains why Alejandro Balde may leave Barcelona in January

Barcelona full‑back Alejandro Balde is reportedly weighing a January move after playing only sparingly in the first two months of the campaign, prompting coach Hansi Flick to address his situation at a Friday press conference.

Limited opportunities behind established rivals

Flick noted that the form of João Cancelo and the rapid rise of Xavi Espart have made it virtually impossible for Balde to feature regularly in the left‑back role. Both players are described as “top players who are playing at a very high level”, leaving Balde on the periphery.

The coach praised Balde’s professionalism, saying, “It’s not easy for him right now, but he’s training, which is the most important thing he needs to do, and he’s training very well.” He added that Balde “does his job professionally” and remains ready if called upon.

Transfer rumours and future options

During the summer, Balde was heavily linked with a move away, and Manchester United showed serious interest. Despite the attention, he chose to stay and fight for his place.

Flick acknowledged that Barcelona currently possess better left‑back options, citing Balde’s injury history and a lack of consistent improvement in his attacking decision‑making over the past twelve to fifteen months. The coach suggested that Balde can either wait for internal circumstances to change or seek a club where he can start each week.

As the January window approaches, the Spanish giants face a decision on whether to retain a player who, while still highly regarded, has seen his depth‑chart position eroded by Cancelo and Espart.
