Hajduk's derby win fuels confidence, Ajax seeks form
Ajax can get their hands dirty before Thursday, when they play the Conference League at Hajduk Split, who on Saturday beat the Croatian top side Dinamo Zagreb 2‑1 and thereby put the Bili at the top of the national league.
Derby victory of Hajduk
The match, called by the Croatians the Vjecni derbi or Eternal Derby, was about the top spot; both teams started with sixteen points, although Hajduk had played one more match. The visitors from Zagreb opened the game with an early lead.
Striker Dion Beljo, who was still on target against Spain in the Nations League, put Dinamo ahead 0‑1 in the first half. Three minutes later defender Scott McKenna forced his own goalkeeper into an own goal, bringing the score to 1‑1.
In the second half Hajduk, under the leadership of former FC Twente coach Gonzalo García, took control. After just over an hour, Abdoulie Sanyang provided the winning 2‑1.
Conference League start: Ajax and FC Twente ready for first duel
A large fireworks display by the supporters briefly interrupted the match, but the victory remained undisputed. With that win the Bili now sit at the top of the Croatian league.
Ajax's home streak and preparation
Ajax remains unbeaten at home this season in all competitions. With Alec Van Hoorenbeeck, former Heracles Almelo and Twente player, they have a familiar Eredivisie name in the squad. The club plays Saturday evening against NEC in the Eredivisie, before they travel to Split.
Thus Ajax heads to Split on Thursday with a good feeling, while Hajduk after the Derby wants to defend their home advantage with confidence. The confrontation promises an exciting clash between two unbeaten home streaks.
