Giroud emotional return to Emirates Stadium ahead of Arsenal‑Lille
"I'm going to try not to get too emotional today," said Olivier Giroud as he stepped onto the Emirates Stadium this Tuesday, for the Champions League match pitting LOSC against Arsenal. The 40‑year‑old 2018 World Cup winner thus made a memorable return in front of the Gunners' crowd, as he appears to be preparing his very last season at the highest level.
A legendary spell at Arsenal
Giroud experienced the decisive period of his career at Arsenal from 2012 to 2018, tallying 253 matches in all competitions and scoring 105 goals. During those six seasons, he won three FA Cups, in 2014, 2015 and 2017, cementing his status as a prolific scorer within the London club.
A historic performance in the European Cup
Entering in the 78th minute, while the Dogs were leading 3‑0 thanks to Jurriën Timber (64th), Eberechi Eze (67th) and Bukayo Saka (71st), Giroud received an ovation from the London crowd. Arsenal supporters even sang a tribute to the tune of "Hey Jude", highlighting the affection for the former French striker.

The match ended without LOSC managing to narrow the gap in the final twenty minutes, as Mikel Arteta's starters secured the final victory. Giroud left the pitch amid applause, offering a lap of honour to the crowd.
A French record beyond 40 years
At 40 years and 13 days old, he becomes the first French player to feature in the European Cup after turning forty. This achievement adds to his already impressive trophy cabinet, which includes the 2018 World Cup title with Les Bleus and the 2017 Puskás Award for his scorpion kick against Crystal Palace.
