GFA faces pivotal decision on Queiroz as World Cup report reviewed

The Ghana Football Association Executive Council convenes today to decide the future of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz after reviewing his technical report on Ghana's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, which saw the team reach the Round of 32.

Carlos Queiroz, the Portuguese tactician, was appointed in April to replace Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars.

Ghana opened Group L with a hard‑fought 1‑0 victory over Panama and then held England to a goalless draw, giving the team a solid start in the North America tournament.

A 2‑1 defeat to Croatia in the final group match left Ghana as one of the competition's best third‑placed teams, allowing them to progress to the knockout stage.

In the Round of 32, the Black Stars were eliminated by Colombia after a narrow 1‑0 loss, ending their World Cup journey.

Following the tournament, Queiroz submitted his technical report, marked as Queiroz[/caption], to the GFA, where it will be scrutinised by the Executive Council during today's meeting.

Council members are also expected to decide whether the 73‑year‑old will continue as head coach of the senior national team.

Speculation about Queiroz's departure intensified after a social‑media post was widely read as a farewell message, but the coach later dismissed resignation rumours in a viral interview, saying the post was simply gratitude for Ghanaian support throughout the World Cup.

President John Dramani Mahama publicly backed Queiroz, stating, "I'm sure that if we keep this team, and we persuade the coach Carlos Queiroz to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we'll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those two competitions," during an inspection visit to the Ho Sports Stadium.

With the World Cup now behind them, attention shifts to qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana have been drawn in a qualifying group alongside Cte d'Ivoire, Gambia and Somalia, with their campaign set to begin in September as they aim to return to the continental tournament after missing the previous edition.
