Getafe's salary‑cap test threatens Carvajal deal
Getafe are on the brink of signing 34‑year‑old former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal, but a LaLiga salary‑cap restriction still stands in the way of an official registration. The player became a free agent when his contract expired on 30 June 2026, and the club completed his medical and agreed personal terms earlier this week.
Financial ceiling remains the final obstacle
Fichajes reported on Tuesday 6 October that Getafe must create sufficient wage space within the league’s financial limits before Carvajal can be added to José Bordalás’ squad. The club’s president Ángel Torres confirmed the agreement and medical are finalised, but the registration question is pending LaLiga’s approval.
Bordalás has previously acknowledged that Getafe operate with less financial capacity than many LaLiga rivals, meaning the salary‑cap approval is a material condition rather than a routine formality. The league’s salary‑limit framework determines whether clubs can register new players, even when no transfer fee is involved.
Free‑agent status does not bypass the rules
Carvajal’s free‑agent status means Getafe will not owe a transfer fee to Real Madrid, yet the club still needs to satisfy the wage‑budget requirements. The defender has not played an official match since leaving Real Madrid, and the move would return him to Madrid and keep him in LaLiga.
Torres told Chiringuito TV that “there is nothing, everything has broken down,” after earlier indicating the deal was close. He added that all parties – LaLiga, the player and the club – must give the final ‘ok’ before any announcement can be made.
If LaLiga grants the green light, Carvajal could officially join Getafe after roughly four months without a club. Until then, the medical and personal agreement represent progress, but not a completed signing.
