Germany entrusts Jürgen Klopp with national team ahead of Netherlands clash

Jürgen Klopp has been introduced as the new head coach of the Duitsland (Germany) national team, signing a contract that runs through the WK 2030. The 59‑year‑old will make his debut on 24 September in Amsterdam, leading die Mannschaft against the Netherlands (Oranje) in the Nations League.

De DFB said the appointment aims to lift die Mannschaft after a disappointing World Cup, tasking the 59‑year‑old to restore pride. "Bijna niets kan ons Duitsers zo samenbrengen als het nationale team," Klopp remarked.

Klopp wants the side to play attractive football that fans love, stating he wants the boys to think “Wow, that’s how I like to play” after every match. He added that the job is special because it brings Germans together.

He will be assisted by Peter Krawietz, Dutch coach Pepijn Lijnders and former international Sven Bender, forming his core staff.

This is Klopp’s first coaching role since leaving Liverpool in 2024, where he won the 2019 Champions League and the 2020 English league title. He then served as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull, settling his contract before taking the national job.

The Deutsche Fußball‑Bund (German football association) will donate one million euros to the Wings for Life charity linked to Red Bull and has scheduled three friendlies in Leipzig, a club owned by the energy‑drink firm.

Alongside the coaching change, the DFB appointed former defender Per Mertesacker as its new general director, succeeding Andreas Rettig at year‑end. Mertesacker, a 2014 World Cup winner, previously managed Arsenal’s youth academy.

Klopp replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany’s early exit from the World Cup, losing on penalties to Paraguay. Since the 2014 triumph, the Germans have failed to win a knockout match at a World Cup.

For Germany, Klopp’s arrival signals a fresh start to revive die Mannschaft and restore confidence ahead of upcoming Nations League fixtures. For Klopp, it marks his first national‑team assignment, offering a platform to implement his football philosophy.
