French authorities ban Olympiakos fans from the Stade Vélodrome on 28 January

On a cold Thursday evening in Marseille, thousands of Olympique Marseille supporters were ready in the Stade Vélodrome, while French authorities imposed a ban on Olympiakos fans two days before kickoff. The decision, which was announced on Tuesday, has increased uncertainty for the many Anderlecht supporters who had already planned their trip to the European match.

French security measures

The French police assessed the risk of incidents as particularly high and banned Olympiakos fans from attending the Europa League match against Olympique Marseille. In addition to the stadium, supporters in six districts of Marseille were temporarily prohibited from being on public roads. Supporters of Red Star Belgrade were also affected by the same measure.

Implications for ticket holders

Olympiakos has announced via its official website that the tickets sold for the away section and other already sold tickets will be refunded. For Anderlecht fans there is not yet an official ban; if they are deemed welcome, about 3,300 seats could become available.

The late announcement of the ban makes it especially painful for the purple‑white fans who had already prepared their trip. The decision shows how close to a match the French government can still intervene when public order is at risk.

Anderlecht previously received European sanctions after supporter incidents at Real Sociedad. The club's reputation is now being scrutinised again, partly due to the friendship ties between Mauve Army 03 and supporters of Olympique Lyon, a major rival of Marseille.

The rivalry between Lyon and Marseille, combined with the presence of Greek Olympiakos supporters and the proximity of AEK Athens fans, is cited as one of the reasons for the ban. In addition, the ongoing student protests in the city play a role in the security assessment.

The match on 28 January 2027 is the final of the League stage of the Europa League. A positive result could determine whether Anderlecht progresses to the next round, giving the uncertainty surrounding the supporter allocation an extra dimension.
