Foot injury keeps Van Hecke out of the Oranje's trip to Greece

The Dutch national team departs without Jan Paul van Hecke to Greece for the third Nations League match of this international window. The 26‑year‑old defender returns to Tottenham Hotspur with a foot injury and therefore cannot take part. The rest of the squad flies this afternoon to the Greek stadium.

Injury forces Van Hecke out

There have been doubts about Van Hecke’s participation since Wednesday afternoon. The Zeeland native started training this morning in Zeist, but reported to Xavi after a few minutes. After consulting the national coach, he stopped the session and took a seat in the dug‑out. The foot injury is so serious that he now leaves the Dutch national team.

Squad and replacement options

National coach Xavi does not call up a replacement, the KNVB says in a press release. Van Hecke was a starter in the central defence alongside Virgil van Dijk in the first two internationals under Xavi. Jurriën Timber is mentioned as a possible replacement, although it is unclear whether the Arsenal defender can play a full ninety minutes after his groin injury.

The Netherlands is dealing with multiple injury concerns this international window. Brian Brobbey, Cody Gakpo and Lutsharel Geertruida have already withdrawn due to various ailments, while Justin Kluivert and Donyell Malen initially reported to the national coach.

After the disappointing World Cup, the Dutch national team faces the next challenge: the Nations League 2026/27. In the group stage, the Netherlands will meet Germany, Serbia and Greece. The third Nations League match in Greece therefore becomes a crucial test.

For more details about the tournament and the schedule, the KNVB refers to the dedicated Nations League page and to VI PRO for extensive stories about the Netherlands.
