Florian Wirtz's record price worries the Reds in the Premier League
Against Manchester City on Sunday, Florian Wirtz once again showed his limits, creating no decisive chances and feeding the doubts of Liverpool Reds supporters in the Premier League. After a summer 2025 in which the club spent a record amount for the German midfielder, his performances remain far below expectations.
A controversial record investment
Florian Wirtz's transfer to Liverpool was confirmed in the summer of 2025. One source cites a fee of £116 million, while another puts the price at £107 million, creating uncertainty about the true cost of the deal.
In 56 appearances for the Reds, the German midfielder has scored only seven goals and provided eleven assists. Those numbers look meagre for a player billed as Liverpool's future attacking pivot.
According to the X account The Touchline, Wirtz has been neither decisive nor created a single big chance in 31 of the 39 matches played, that is 79 % of the time. This lack of creation translates into a limited impact on the team's play.
Top‑game flop: Liverpool legend demands Wirtz dropped from starting XI
In one season, he has produced only four big chances in the English league. To put that figure in perspective, Hector Bellerín generated as many in a single match against Stoke City in the 2015‑2016 season.
Unmet expectations
Arne Slot signed Wirtz in June 2025 with the idea of building the team around him, positioning him as a number 10 rather than in a three‑man midfield. The player was supposed to become the focal point of the midfield, a role that never truly materialised.
John Cross recalled that “When you put a £100m price tag on a player, expectation levels immediately go through the roof,” adding that “the reality is the Liverpool playmaker has not remotely delivered.” He concluded that “You cannot for a moment say that Liverpool have not given him every chance to succeed.”

Faced with these worrying statistics, the Reds' hierarchy are now considering “biting the bullet” and reassessing Florian Wirtz's future at Liverpool, a dilemma that could shape the next Premier League campaign.
