Premier League ex‑Brighton professional Doug Loft dies at 39
The former midfielder of the Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, Doug Loft, died at the age of 39 after a medical emergency over the weekend. In his career he spent five years with Port Vale and made 49 competitive appearances for the Seagulls.
Loft began his professional career in 2006 at Brighton & Hove Albion and made a total of 49 competitive appearances there until 2009, while the club was in the Championship and later in League One. He then moved to Port Vale, where he spent five years, made over 170 league appearances and wore the captain’s armband. In addition to his time in Stoke‑on‑Trent, he played for Gillingham, Colchester United and Shrewsbury Town and ended his career in 2023 with Tonbridge Angels FC in the National League South. In total he recorded more than 420 appearances in an 18‑year career.
In the 2011‑12 season he was voted Port Vale’s Player of the Year. The following year he led the side as captain to promotion into the Sky Bet League One.
His former manager Micky Adams told the BBC, “no one could have been prouder to have been the club’s captain.” Adams highlighted Loft’s impact on the team and his leadership qualities.
