Fifa Super League fears rise as Arsenal eye Vinícius Júnior

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball ·

On a bustling London street, fans clutching Arsenal scarves watch a billboard flashing the words ‘Fifa Super League’ as debate erupts over Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell World Cup commercial rights, while the Gunners’ pursuit of Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior adds another layer to the controversy.

Five years ago, supporters flooded the streets to block the European Super League breakaway attempt. That mass mobilisation demonstrated how far fans will go to protect the club game.

A similar wave of opposition has risen against FIFA’s proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup. Critics argue the plan threatens the soul of the sport just as the earlier Super League plan did.

FIFA estimates it earned $15 billion from the 2026 World Cup, yet Gianni Infantino is seeking an additional $20 billion by commercialising tournament rights to private investors. The investment plan would hand over the World Cup’s lucrative branding to outside hands.

The backlash to Tuesday’s announcement was swift. UEFA accused FIFA of ‘attempting to sell the soul of football’, while UK prime minister Andy Burnham reminded Infantino that the World Cup ‘was never anyone’s to sell’. The FA said it had been ‘completely unaware’ of the scheme.

CONCACAF also voiced concerns, and several European nations have hinted at boycotting future World Cups after a summer that pushed many federations to the brink. The backlash reverberates across Europe, where clubs recall the 2021 Super League saga.

Arsenal’s transfer targets have turned to the left wing, where Vinícius Júnior stands out. The Brazilian has amassed 228 goal contributions – 128 goals and 100 assists – in 375 matches for Real Madrid, including 22 goals across all competitions last season.

The Gunners have already reinforced their squad, adding Viktor Gyökeres as a striker and Martín Zubimendi to bolster midfield. After Leandro Trossard’s move to Besiktas left a void, Gabriel Martinelli and Trossard together managed only seven league goals last campaign, underscoring the need for a prolific left‑winger.

Would Vinícius Júnior’s signing take Arsenal to the next level? The answer may hinge on whether fans and governing bodies accept the evolving commercial landscape of football.
