Ferraris gets green light, Genoa speeds up Euro 2032 bid

The Conferenza dei servizi has approved the renovation project for the Ferraris stadium, and the Comune di Genova has confirmed its candidacy to host Euro 2032, outlining the next steps toward starting the works of the Progetto, including timelines for tendering and financing.

The decision marks a decisive step for the future of the historic Luigi Ferraris stadium. It aims to transform the Marassi venue into a modern arena that meets contemporary demands.

According to Calcio e Finanza, the Conferenza dei servizi gave a favourable opinion on the Marassi redevelopment, clearing the administrative path to upgrade the stadium to UEFA Categoria 4 standards. The upgrade will align the facility with the requirements for hosting Euro matches.

The project is driven by Genova Stadium S.r.l., a company jointly owned by Genoa and Sampdoria. It includes not only the refurbishment of the Ferraris but also the revitalisation of Villa Musso‑Piantelli and surrounding zones.

Some prescriptions and conditions remain to be satisfied, yet the overall assessment is positive. The municipal council reiterated the public interest of the intervention.

The council also confirmed the intention to officially nominate the Ferraris among the stadiums slated for EURO 2032, and all documentation has been sent to the FIGC to support the bid. This step underscores the city's commitment to the European tournament.

Mayor Silvia Salis said, “The resolution approved by the council marks a decisive and concrete step in the path to equip Genoa with a stadium worthy of major European capitals and fully compliant with UEFA Category 4, an essential requirement for our Euro 2032 bid.” She added that the stadium will not be sold to private hands and will serve as a daily regeneration engine for the Marassi neighbourhood.

By 15 September, Genova Stadium must present binding financial commitments from investors, after which the council will decide on the demanialisation of part of the site and related asset issues. The public tender is planned for autumn 2026, with award expected by March 2027 and construction to finish by March 2031, matching the Euro 2032 timetable. Private investors are expected to contribute around €100 million, while the municipality retains ownership and guarantees at least 20 public event days per year.
