Federation moves to suspend Ronaldo as urgent disciplinary probe begins
On Saturday 10 October, the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol (FPF) announced a preventive suspension for the 41‑year‑old striker Cristiano Ronaldo and opened an urgent disciplinary investigation into the incident that saw him leave the Portugal national team camp.
Preventive measure and confidential procedure
The FPF confirmed that the suspension is not automatic; it will remain in place while the case is examined by the Comissão de Instrução Disciplinar. The federation also declared the process urgent and ordered that all details stay confidential until the instruction phase ends.
The non‑professional section of the FPF had originally deliberated on the matter on 9 October 2026, after which the case was forwarded to the disciplinary commission on 10 October.
Background to the disciplinary action
The episode dates back to 30 September, when Ronaldo walked out of the Portugal camp on the eve of the Nations League clash with Denmark, following a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus after not being used against Norway despite warming up for about 30 minutes.

Ronaldo later issued a lengthy statement expressing disappointment with the coach’s comments and apologising to teammates and fans, while acknowledging that “I am not just a player. I am the captain of the team, and that is a aggravating circumstance.”
In his statement he also accepted that a sanction could follow, noting the possibility of a suspension ranging from one to six months.
While the investigation proceeds, the FPF has not disclosed any timeline for a final decision or the nature of any eventual penalty.
