EXCLUSIVE: Gallas doubts Saliba’s World Cup shine vs Arsenal form
William Gallas, speaking exclusively to Get French Football News, says William Saliba delivered a good performance at the World Cup but it was not the best when measured against his displays for Arsenal. The former France, Arsenal and Chelsea defender remains convinced the French defender’s international level falls short of his club form.
Gallas recalled that in their previous conversation he noted Saliba had not yet shown his Arsenal form for France. He reiterated that point, emphasizing the gap between the defender’s club confidence and his national‑team output.
He explained that Saliba was deployed on the left side of the back line during the tournament, a position that forced the right‑footed player to adjust his ball control. "He had a good performance, but when he plays on the left side he has to be more focused because the ball has to be on his left foot," Gallas said, adding that this shift made Saliba appear slightly uncomfortable.
Gallas also highlighted the competition Saliba faced from Dayot Upamecano, who normally occupies the right‑side role at Bayern Munich. Upamecano was preferred for the right‑hand position, leaving Saliba to adapt to an unfamiliar side.
Despite the challenges, Gallas believes Saliba can still display more of his quality for France. He stated, "I would say he had a good performance, but not the best one as he had with Arsenal," and expressed confidence in the defender’s potential.
Turning to Chelsea, Gallas noted the club’s heavy spending and constant turnover, questioning whether this hampers progress. He suggested that new manager Mauricio Alonso could be crucial, saying, "Alonso can be very important for them because good players alone do not guarantee immediate results."
Gallas warned that Chelsea will start the season at a disadvantage point due to many new players, a new coach and a new system. He added that Alonso’s task will be to restore confidence and guide the team back to the level expected of them.
