Endless miles, relentless standards: Alonso drives Chelsea’s pre‑season

While the Blues endured a grueling 56‑hour, 24,561‑mile itinerary, Xabi Alonso used the same journey to embed a no‑excuses culture, setting the tone for his inaugural pre‑season at Chelsea. The marathon travel spanned continents, with flights to Sydney, Hong Kong, Jakarta and Malaysia, testing stamina before any competitive match.

Travel mileage eclipses rivals

Image source, Getty ImagesImage, notes that Chelsea have won two of five pre‑season matches, but the real story is the distance covered. The schedule, organised before Alonso’s May appointment, saw the squad in the air for 56 hours, a mileage total that dwarfs most rivals.

Alonso’s fitness benchmark

Despite the exhaustion, Alonso ran at a pace of four minutes 30 seconds per kilometre alongside staff, demonstrating the fitness bar he expects his players to meet. His personal effort underscored a hands‑on approach that left no room for complacency.

Tour itinerary outpaces all Premier League clubs

The Blues travelled farther than any other Premier League side, almost twice the mileage of last season’s US tour under former boss Enzo Maresca. Stops included Sydney, Hong Kong and Jakarta before ending in Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia on Sunday.

Alonso’s hands‑on approach saw him lead a staff match, win it and set up most of the goals, while he also showcased his passing by crossing with his weaker right foot and smashing a 25‑yard half‑volley into the net.

Midfielder Romeo Lavia praised the session, saying, “The manager was a great player, one of the best of his generation. You see that when he steps into a training session. He starts pinging balls around in a way only those who have played at the top level can.” England defender Levi Colwill admitted he was “jealous” of how well Alonso could “spray balls around”, echoing the admiration felt by the squad.

Beyond training, younger players enjoyed cinema trips, boat rides and games at a luxury hotel overlooking Darling Harbour, while sponsor events near Bondi Beach and a gym session at North Sydney Pool added a social dimension. Les Kiss, Australia’s rugby union head coach and Chelsea supporter, visited the camp, exchanged shirts with Alonso and highlighted the tour’s cultural exchange.

On the pitch, Chelsea recorded a 6‑4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers and a 2‑1 loss to Tottenham, underscoring that the building phase is still in its infancy.

After two weeks at Cobham, the Blues will face Alonso’s former club Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge on 15 August before opening their Premier League campaign against Fulham on 24 August.
