Éléphants of Côte d’Ivoire face new era as Faé’s exit looms

In the bustling Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the Ivory Coast’s Elephants brace for change as 42‑year‑old former FC Nantes defensive midfielder Emerse Faé prepares to leave his role as national team coach when his contract expires this Friday after leading the team.

Faé was appointed at the start of 2024 during the Coupe d’Afrique des Nations 2023. The appointment came as the Elephants were competing in the tournament on home soil. L’Équipe later confirmed his appointment.

He initially took charge on an interim basis after the departure of Jean‑Louis Gasset. The federation later confirmed him as the permanent head coach of the Elephants.

His permanent appointment arrived in the middle of the AFCON 2023 campaign, which was staged in Côte d’Ivoire. The tournament provided a platform for his leadership.

Under Faé’s guidance, the Elephants captured the AFCON 2023 trophy, delivering the nation its third African championship. The triumph marked a swift return to continental glory after a period of mixed results.

Faé also oversaw Ivory Coast’s first successful group‑stage qualification for the Coupe du Monde 2026, a feat the country had not achieved in twelve years. The team later fell 2‑1 to Norway in the round of 16, with Norway featuring striker Erling Haaland.

L’Équipe reported that Faé’s contract expires on Friday and will not be renewed, meaning he will cease to be the Elephants’ coach. The Ivorian federation has not yet issued an official announcement of his departure.

The federation’s statement described the moment as “La fin d’une belle aventure,” underscoring the emotional weight for the Elephants today. A successor is expected to be named quickly as the national side prepares for upcoming international matches.
