The EFL confirmed that Charlton Athletic issued a release after a 33‑year‑old man was found dead at The Valley stadium early on Tuesday, 18 August, with officers arriving at around 11:15 hrs. The death, treated as unexpected, follows the club’s 2‑1 Championship opener win over Derby County on Saturday.

Police Investigation Details

At around 11:15 hrs on Tuesday, 18 August, officers attended The Valley stadium on Floyd Road in Charlton after concerns for a person’s welfare. They, alongside the London Ambulance Service, located a 33‑year‑old man who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are treating the death as unexpected and are investigating the possibility that the man fell from a height before his death.

Charlton Athletic released a statement confirming they are cooperating with police and expressing deepest sympathies to the deceased’s family, friends and loved ones. The club stressed there is no suggestion of wrongdoing on its part and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy.
