Dungannon Swifts aim to rebound after double final loss

Dungannon Swifts closed the 2025‑26 campaign with heartbreak, losing both the Irish Cup final and the European play‑off final, yet manager Rodney McAree can point to a second consecutive top‑six league finish and a summer overhaul as the club seeks a fresh start.

The Swifts fell short in the Irish Cup final and were also beaten in the European play‑off final, ending the season without silverware. Both matches underscored the narrow margin between the club and trophy success.

Despite the cup disappointments, the Swifts finished sixth in the league, marking the second year in a row the club has ended inside the top six. The consistent league performance provides a platform for rebuilding.

The off‑season saw eight players leave Dungannon Swifts. Among them, youngster Daniel McCarron secured a move to Arsenal’s academy.

Rodney McAree responded by adding experience, signing Jamie Glackin from Coleraine and securing Kris Lowe. Barney McKeown, who played for relegated Glenavon last season, also completed his move to the Swifts.

Midfielder Michael McElhatton returned after a successful spell at Dergview, bolstering the midfield options ahead of the new campaign. His comeback adds depth to a squad undergoing transition.

Dungannon Swifts open the 2026‑27 season with five fixtures: they host Coleraine, travel to Portadown, host Bangor, travel to Cliftonville and finish the opening run away at Limavady United. These early matches will test the impact of the summer signings.

A strong start could cement the Swifts’ ambition to improve on last season’s cup disappointments. The club hopes the new arrivals will translate into better results.
