Liverpool’s Jacquet arrival hailed as Europe’s next defensive star

Liverpool have completed the signing of French defender Jeremy Jacquet from Ligue 1 side Rennes, beating Chelsea for his services and moving the mystery player to Anfield ahead of the new season. Manager Andoni Iraola told the 22‑year‑old he is “already one of the best in Europe’” and an “enormous upgrade”, and Zinedine Zidane is reported to admire him.

Replacing Konate and strengthening the back line

Jacquet arrives as the direct replacement for Real Madrid newcomer Ibrahima Konate, who has struggled to find form at Liverpool and in Spain. The French international is already being described as a significant upgrade on the former Reds star. He has been paired with captain Virgil van Dijk from the start of the campaign.

Iraola’s endorsement reflects Liverpool’s belief that Jacquet can raise the defensive standard that the club has long prized. By securing the player before the season, the Reds ensured they would not lose the battle for his signature to Chelsea, whose interest underscored the defender’s reputation.

Expert praise and European standing

European football analyst Andy Brassell echoed the manager’s view, calling Jacquet an “enormous upgrade” on what preceded him at both club and international level. “What’s clear is that even at this early stage in his international career, he feels an enormous upgrade on the players around him,” he told. Brassell added that Konate “has not had his best year, both with Liverpool and Real Madrid” and that Jacquet’s impact “is absolutely remarkable for someone of his age.”

Brassell also explained why France boss Zinedine Zidane is a vocal admirer. “He’s everything that Zidane loves – physical, composed on the ball and a good leader,” he said, noting that the French coach expects a level of maturity “more than most coaches do”. According to Brassell, Jacquet is already being counted among the best five to ten centre‑backs in Europe.

Jacquet has already impressed for France during the recent international break, showing the same composure that earned him a place alongside Van Dijk at Liverpool. His seamless integration suggests the defender can maintain his high standards on both club and country stages.
