Dortmund’s €34.6m gamble on Greece’s Konstantinos Karetsas from Genk
Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Monday the signing of Greece attacking midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas from Belgian side KRC Genk for a reported fee of $34.6 million, securing the 18‑year‑old on a five‑year contract that runs until June 2031. The move follows intense interest from multiple clubs after his breakthrough season.
During the 2024‑25 season Karetsas impressed at Genk, providing 11 assists across 28 Jupiler Pro League matches, which made him a target for many clubs. Dortmund managing director for sport Lars Ricken said the club sees even more potential in him that they want to help realise together.
Sporting director Ole Book highlighted Karetsas’s creativity and game intelligence, stating he will enrich the Dortmund side. Book added that the Greek midfielder is technically skilled and can find quick solutions in tight spaces, especially in the final third.
Karetsas, who previously represented Belgium’s youth teams, switched allegiance to Greece and debuted for the senior side in March 2025. He has already scored three goals in ten international appearances for Greece.

The $34.6 million fee provides Genk with significant funds, while Dortmund secures a highly‑rated attacking midfielder on a long‑term deal. Both clubs anticipate the transfer will shape their strategies in the upcoming Bundesliga and European campaigns.
