Doncaster's one‑year deadline puts Molyneux’s future in doubt
One year remains on his League One contract for 28‑year‑old midfielder Luke Molyneux, who has turned down a new deal as Doncaster Rovers reject an external bid. The midfielder, with 36 goals in 170 league appearances for the club, now faces a final season before becoming a free agent.
Doncaster Rovers have officially rejected the external bid for Molyneux, and the midfielder also declined the club’s new contract offer, leaving him with a single year remaining on his deal. His record of 36 goals in 170 league matches underscores his importance to the League One side.
Molyneux began his professional career with Sunderland before joining Doncaster Rovers, where he established himself as a regular contributor. The transition from Sunderland to Doncaster marked the start of a prolific spell in English football.
Boss Grant McCann told the club website that Molyneux has not wanted to get into negotiations. “Luke, unfortunately, has not wanted to get into negotiations. He’s rejected a deal, which is his prerogative, so that’s where he is,” McCann said.
McCann added that Doncaster had offered the new contract well before the external bid arrived, indicating the club’s proactive approach to retain the midfielder.
With only one year left on his contract, Molyneux will become a free agent at the end of the season, meaning Doncaster could lose a key midfielder without receiving any compensation.
The Rovers have shifted their attention to captain Owen Bailey, who netted 16 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions last season. He also has one year remaining on his deal, with the club holding an option to extend it by 12 months, and McCann said discussions are ongoing, stating, “Owen, we’re in discussions with, I don’t think we’re too far away.”
Losing Molyneux on a free transfer highlights the financial risk clubs face when contract extensions are declined, underscoring the importance of timely negotiations in the modern transfer market.
