Djoker Merino keeps Spain's world record streak after win over Croatia

Spain remains unbeaten in the Nations League after Mikel Merino put the team back in front after an early deficit against Croatia. The victory secures the world champion the top spot in Group A3 and extends the run of 42 games without defeat.

Early lead and previous defeat

Former Bundesliga professional Ivan Perišić gave the Croatians the lead in the 17th minute, mitigating the damage after the devastating 0‑7 loss to England three days earlier. This early lead showed the threat Croatia posed to the Spaniards.

Spain struggled until Merino, after coming on as a substitute in the 61st minute, scored the equaliser. This made the game open again and the Spaniards could build pressure once more.

Late decision and upcoming matches

Later on, Perišić had a big chance, which he missed against Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón. After a foul on Spain's Cucurella, the Croatian received a yellow‑red card and had to leave the field in the 79th minute.

With the numerical advantage, Spain took advantage of the situation, and Merino converted the winning goal two minutes before full time, which finally decided the match.

To conclude the group stage, Spain will face the Czech Republic and England in mid‑November (on the 12th and 15th of November at 20:45). Croatia will host England first and then travel to the Czech Republic.
