Deschamps linked with Lyon amid doubts over his anti‑Lyon reputation

Former France coach Didier Deschamps is now the newest hot rumor among Olympique Lyonnais supporters as a possible appointment. He has recently been linked with Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United, his name also surfaces in Turkey, while the Gones’ bench may open up with Paulo Fonseca set to depart for Sporting.

Deschamps' fraught relationship with Lyon players

It remains unclear whether Deschamps would be a credible option for Olympique Lyonnais. Nevertheless, his name continues to circulate among the club’s fans.

The issue was raised in responses to a tweet about the potential appointment. How would Deschamps manage Lyon if he dislikes its players?

Deschamps is accused of being anti‑Lyonnais. He previously coached Monaco and Olympique de Marseille.

In recent years as France manager he was accused of mistreatment towards players from Lyon or the Rhône region. The criticism highlighted Alexandre Lacazette, who rarely received a chance with the national team.

Corentin Tolisso was never recalled despite regular Ligue 1 performances. A prevailing narrative suggests players must leave Lyon to earn a France call‑up.

Tolisso received his first call‑up in June 2017, a few weeks before signing for Bayern. A year earlier, Samuel Umtiti joined the national team just before moving to Barcelona.

Rayan Cherki had to wait until May 2025 for his first call, the summer of his transfer to Manchester City. Bradley Barcola’s debut for France came a year after his move to PSG.
