De Mil's decisive push: Gent face Hibernian for Conference League berth

KAA Gent will host the Schotse Hibernian on Thursday evening, with Coach Rik De Mil insisting that the clash is the decisive step toward securing a place in the League Phase of the Conference League, and there can be no doubt Hierover about the team’s intent.

Recent qualifying hurdles

The photo caption notes “Twee klips omzeild, op naar de derde en laatste.” In the earlier rounds Gent drew 0‑0 twice against Cherkasy, with Davy Roef emerging as the penalty hero. The Swedish side IFK Götteborg proved tougher, handing Gent a 0‑1 loss away and a 1‑1 draw at home.

Benchmark and preparation

Gent’s staff point to the Buffalo's experience of three successful qualifying rounds as the benchmark for this tie. The match against OH Leuven has been postponed to 3 September, allowing the squad to concentrate fully on the upcoming clash.

Coach Rik De Mil stressed, “We realise this is an important two‑legged tie. We want to reach the group stage, as we said at the start of the season. It creates enthusiasm, but we must be very good.” He added, “It lives with everyone and is necessary. We must start at home and avoid a cautious approach, even if we cannot afford to be passive.”

Everyone is fit for the encounter – except Goore and Samoise – giving De Mil the freedom to select his strongest eleven. The team will face the HIbernian side in a decisive match that Buffalo's have survived before, underscoring the importance of the fixture.

The game kicks off at 20.30, and fans can follow the live action on the club’s channels.
