David Alaba, free from Real Madrid, signs for Udinese in a new Italian adventure

While many big names of European football are heading to the Gulf leagues, the Austrian international David Alaba, a free agent since the end of his contract with Real Madrid, has chosen Italy and has signed with Udinese for the next season.

A contract with differing details according to sources

The first report says Alaba signed a two‑season deal with the Friulian club, while the second specifies that the 34‑year‑old defender concluded a one‑season contract, valid until June 2027. Both versions agree that the player left Real Madrid as a free agent.

After a career marked by spells in Austria, Germany, Spain and finally Spain with Real Madrid, Alaba is about to discover his fourth domestic league, Serie A.

A sporting challenge after a period of inactivity

The defender has not played since July 2, the date of Austria’s elimination by Spain in the World Cup round of 16, and he will need to gradually regain his rhythm.

Udinese, which has conceded eight goals in its last three matchdays and sits in thirteenth place in the table, is counting on Alaba to shore up a defence considered fragile.

Rumours had mentioned a possible move to Mexican club América, as well as a potential stint in the Middle East, but the player ultimately favoured staying at the highest European level.

On September 23, journalist Fabrizio Romano posted a video showing Alaba entering Udinese’s training ground for his medical examinations, thus confirming his arrival at the Italian club.
