Czech Republic makes historic move with first foreign coach

On a bright Friday morning at the Czech Football Association headquarters, 56‑year‑old Spaniard Santi Denia stepped onto the podium for his official introduction as the new head coach of the Czech Republic national team. The ceremony marked a historic first: Denia is the inaugural foreign manager to lead the side.

The federation announced that Denia has signed a contract running until 2028, with an option to extend further. He replaces Miroslav Koubek, who left after the team’s early exit from the World Cup group stage.

Denia arrives with a distinguished résumé, highlighted by an Olympic gold medal won with Spain in Paris 2024. He also brings former Spanish professional Pablo Amo as his assistant, and his most recent club role was with Al‑Shahania SC in Qatar.

Former Czech U21 coach Ivan Kopecky welcomed the appointment, telling the agency CTK, "I believe that our football could use some Spanish blood." His comment highlighted the perceived need for fresh tactical input.

General manager and former international Pavel Nedved explained the decision, stating, "Denia has extensive experience and unforgettable successes with the Spanish national teams." Nedved’s endorsement pointed to Denia’s proven track record.

The coaching change follows striker Patrik Schick’s announced retirement from international duty after the World Cup campaign. The federation hopes Denia’s arrival will rejuvenate the squad and restore confidence ahead of upcoming fixtures.
