Czech Republic hires Spanish Olympic champion Santi Denia as coach

By 4AllFootball ·

Spanish players celebrated their former head coach Santi Denia by tossing him into the air after his Olympic victory in Paris, while the Czech Football Association announced that the same Spaniard will become the country’s first foreign football national coach. The juxtaposition highlights a dramatic shift from a jubilant farewell in Spain to a historic appointment in the Czech Republic.

After winning gold at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the Spanish squad lifted Santi Denia into the air in a spontaneous tribute. The celebration underscored the impact of his leadership on the Olympic triumph.

The image of the celebration was supplied by photographer Vadim Ghirda of AP/dpa/dpa‑bilder, confirming the source of the visual record.

The Czech Republic will now be led by the 52‑year‑old Spaniard, whose full name is Santiago Denia Sánchez. The national federation FACR in Prague confirmed a two‑year contract with an option to extend, marking the first time the Czech football national team has appointed a foreign football national coach.

Denia replaces Miroslav Koubek, who stepped down after the Czech side’s early group‑stage exit at the World Cup staged across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Koubek’s resignation opened the door for the new appointment.

"I am glad to be here – and extremely motivated," Denia said, expressing his enthusiasm for the role. He also announced that former professional player Pablo Amo will join him as an assistant coach.

Denia’s first competitive fixtures will come in the UEFA Nations League, where the Czech Lions will face Croatia and England in September. These matches will provide his initial test with the team.

Before his Czech venture, Denia guided Spain to Olympic gold in Paris 2024 and most recently managed Qatari club Al‑Shahania SC. As a defender he played for Albacete Balompié and Atlético Madrid and earned two caps for the Spanish national team in 1997 and 1998.

Football expert and former coach Ivan Kopecky of agency CTK praised the appointment, stating, "I think our football could use some Spanish blood." Kopecky, an 80‑year‑old former U21 national coach, added that Spain’s recent play is creative and confident, qualities he feels are missing among the Czech Republic’s young domestic talents.
