Cunha avoids extra ban after Roma dismissal
UEFA confirmed that Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha will not receive any additional sanction after he returned to the pitch following his dismissal against Roma. Cunha, 27, received his second yellow card in stoppage time of the Champions League tie for a late tackle.
The Brazilian had picked up his first booking after scoring the winning goal, as he took his shirt off and dived into the elated crowd. The report, posted by Nathan Ridley at 15:44 on 4 November 2026, appeared in the Sport section.
Cunha didn’t go down the tunnel after he was given his matching orders and waited on the sidelines until the final whistle. When it sounded, the forward re‑entered the pitch before being ushered away by Michael Carrick, who knew that Cunha was risking adding to his one‑game ban. UEFA confirmed that its official reports did not mention the incident and that the automatic one‑match ban for two yellows would not be extended.
Carrick’s reaction
Michael Carrick said he was disappointed that the sending‑off reduced United to ten men in the dying embers. He also praised Cunha’s equalising goal and the winner that followed a tactical change.
“Matheus can do them things, he’s got them moments,” Carrick explained, adding that a half‑time swap with Bryan Mbeumo placed the Brazilian in a central position where he found space. He added that he was disappointed with how the game finished but that Cunha’s attitude showed the qualities United want.
The win was United’s first in ten games. It gave them their sixth point from four Champions League matches, reviving hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 2022.
“It’s one game, so it depends on what happens next,” the Red Devils boss said, urging the squad to capitalise. He also highlighted the contributions of Carlos Baleba, who had to go off, and Youri Tielemans, who came on and impressed. Cunha will serve the standard one‑match suspension.
