Cucurella smothers Yamal, Real Madrid dominates Clasico in Barcelona

The day after Real Madrid's (1-2) victory in the Clasico, the Spanish press highlighted the duel that stifled Lamine Yamal, emphasizing Marc Cucurella's decisive role in the Madrid club's performance.
Cucurella, the architect of the marking
The Madrid daily described Cucurella as one of the great architects of Real Madrid's success. “Cucurella has made Lamine's life miserable like few footballers are capable of at the moment. They have spent many hours together and the left‑back even seemed to have studied the Barça striker’s heartbeat,” the newspaper wrote. The defender, who has shared the national team with Yaman, used this knowledge to maintain constant contact, with aggressive marking sometimes on the edge, never being penalised.
Lamine Yamal's performance was judged very dull. After an already mediocre match against PSG at the Parc des Princes, the young Barça winger never managed to influence the game, despite a big chance missed in the first half. Kylian Mbappé, who greatly contributed to the Madrid victory, could not compensate for Yamal's lack of impact.

Stakes before the Ballon d’Or
This under‑performance comes just hours before the Ballon d’Or ceremony, organized this Monday in London. Lamine Yamal is among the top favourites alongside Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane, but his missed Clasico tarnishes his headlines. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will be absent from the evening, his knee operation scheduled in Doha after a cruciate ligament rupture against Barça.
Real Madrid won a decisive battle by mastering Yamal’s channel. Always close to the winger, sometimes excessive but never over the top, Cucurella chose to operate at the edge of refereeing, which largely contributed to Barça’s defeat and the loss of its main source of creativity.

The Ballon d’Or votes, already recorded, include Mbappé’s world title, but Yamal’s performance will be closely examined. The young prodigy will need to bounce back quickly to restore his image before the final results are announced.
