Cristiano Ronaldo suspended, FPF only opens disciplinary procedure
The Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro after the captain left the national team training camp during the preparation for the Nations League matches, resulting in a preventive suspension. The president of the FPF, Pedro Proença, emphasized that this is only a procedure and that the goal is to have the captain back in the national team already by November.
Disciplinary procedure initiated
Ronaldo returned unexpectedly to Saudi Arabia, after skipping the fixtures against Denmark and Norway due to clashes with coach Jorge Jesus. The authority therefore imposed a provisional, non‑automatic suspension, described as urgent, to assess the possible disciplinary relevance of the facts reported on 7 October 2026.
The resolution of the Non‑Professional Section, dated 9 October 2026, provides for the initiation of the procedure and its transmission, on 10 October 2026, to the Disciplinary Instruction Commission of the FPF, with exclusion from publicity until the end of the investigation.

Reactions of the FPF
The Portugal captain was already automatically suspended before the decision. Last night the Portuguese Football Federation's social media page celebrated Ronaldo's goal in Saudi Arabia, interpreting it as a possible attempt at reconciliation.
Pedro Proença said: “The federation president has spoken, the technical commissioner has spoken, the team captain has spoken, the players have spoken. This is the moment of calm, of serenity.” He added that everyone is sitting at the same table and that the collective will is to have the captain back as soon as possible.
Porto inauguration: Proença hopes for Ronaldo comeback despite ban
Proença then explained, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Porto Training Centre, that Portugal wants to win the Nations League again and bring together the 25 players in the next stage. He described the recent divergences as misunderstandings to be overcome, reaffirming the desire to have Ronaldo back with the national team by November.
