Crewe’s Lee Bell admits Luke Offord return was beyond the club
Crewe Alexandra completed the return of former captain Luke Offord this month after James Connolly left for Walsall. The 26-year-old centre-back, who first joined Crewe at the age of seven, has rejoined the Alex after two seasons at MK Dons. Offord made 170 first-team appearances for Crewe and captained them to promotion from League Two in 2019-20.
Lee Bell, Crewe’s boss, admitted he initially believed signing Offord back would be impossible for the club. Speaking to BBC Radio Stoke, Bell described Offord as a quality player whose profile would always attract attention. “He’s certainly somebody I thought that would be beyond us,” Bell said. “But he’s been brilliant. He wanted to come back, he feels we can get the best out of him.”
Offord’s versatility allows Bell to deploy him in defence or midfield, offering tactical flexibility. Bell highlighted the player’s ability to adapt to different systems, including back three or back four formations. “He’s a real positive signing,” Bell added. “His return gives us options to go into different shapes more fluently.”
Crewe also signed striker Jordan Gibson on a three-year contract last month to replace outgoing loanees Emre Tezgel and Tommi O’Reilly. Bell emphasised Gibson’s proven record in League Two, noting his experience of promotions. “They’re real high operators in this division who’ve got promotions under the belt,” Bell said.
Bell framed Offord and Gibson as key additions to address recent departures. He praised Offord’s focus and standards, crediting his time under MK Dons manager Paul Warne for his development. “Luke looks ultra-focused and has real high standards of what he’s doing,” Bell said.
The Crewe boss acknowledged the challenges of competing financially in League Two but insisted the club would continue recruiting within its means. “We are where we are but I’ll get on with it and I’ll make a fist of it like we always do,” Bell said. He cited examples like Salford, Bristol Rovers, and Gillingham as clubs pushing at the top end of the market.
Bell is preparing for his fourth full season in charge of Crewe Alexandra, with Offord and Gibson central to his plans for the coming campaign.
