Coventry dominate Newcastle from the sixth minute

On Monday evening, Jack Rudoni’s penalty in the sixth minute opened the scoring for Coventry, marking the start of a 4-1 defeat for Newcastle United on the sixth round of the Premier League. Matias Fernandez‑Pardo played the full 90 minutes and received one of his team’s highest ratings, 7.1/10 on Sofascore. The match took place at Coventry’s ground, where the visitors quickly saw their hopes fade.

A difficult start for the Magpies

From the kickoff, the Magpies realised the evening would be tough. After the penalty, they tried to respond but couldn’t find the back of the net in the first half, leaving Coventry leading 1‑0 at the break. Matias’s lack of goals, signed from Lille this summer for €60 million, has already begun to weigh on the squad’s morale.

A second half that widens the gap

The second half started just as unfavourably: Sidiki Cherif doubled Coventry’s lead in the 48th minute, making it 2‑0. The Magpies only reduced the deficit in the 70th minute thanks to Sven Botman, who capitalised on a pass from Nico González to score his team’s first goal.

Coventry’s final blows

Despite the reduction, Newcastle could not get back into the game. Ellis Simms scored Coventry’s third goal in the 81st minute, after a pass from Brandon Thomas‑Asante, and Mfuni added the fourth goal in stoppage time, following a pass from Dasilva. The final score of 4‑1 reflects the Singers’ dominance throughout the match.

Despite the heavy defeat, Matias Fernandez‑Pardo was one of the highest‑rated players for Newcastle, according to football rating apps. His full involvement and high rating contrast with his lack of goals since joining Newcastle United.
