Controversial refereeing overshadows Nations League duel Netherlands‑Germany

The Nations League‑duel between the Dutch national team and Germany was mainly characterised by referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández and his assistants, who disallowed two Dutch goals – one from Virgil van Dijk and one from Mexx Meerdink. Both decisions seemed highly questionable and affected the match atmosphere.

In addition to the disallowed goals, Denzel Dumfries was tackled by Nadiem Amiri, but the German player received only a yellow card. Dumfries later received a yellow card himself for his reaction to the tackle, putting the refereeing even more under fire.

International and domestic outrage

In Germany and other countries critical reactions poured in: “This is truly a complete failure by the referee…”, questioning whether “Germany has paid this official”. Another voice argued that Amiri’s action deserved a red card and called the referee a “shame”.

During halftime, Rafael van der Vaart expressed his displeasure over the disallowing of Van Dijk’s goal: “This is a gross disgrace… It was also simply very poorly taken.” He emphasised that the VAR had first approved the goal, after which the referee disallowed it again, increasing the confusion.

The accumulation of critical voices has led to calls for an official investigation into the performance of the officials at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
