Conmoción in Ugandan football as captain David Owori is slain

In the dim streets of Makindye, the suburb where he lived, a wave of Conmoción swept through Uganda as 27‑year‑old David Owori Kampala, captain of SC Villa, was attacked on Tuesday night. The assault left the footballer gravely injured and he succumbed to his wounds on Wednesday, 5 August.

Police reports said the captain of SC Villa was beaten to death by alleged thieves near his house in the capital, reigniting public anger over the surge in urban violence. The case has become a focal point for calls to curb street crime.

The attack unfolded at around 20:00 in Makindye, a Kampala neighbourhood. Witnesses described a group of assailants ambushing Owori as he approached his home, striking him with cobblestones and stealing his mobile phone and other belongings. Police said he resisted the robbery before being overpowered.

Asan Kasingye, spokesperson for SC Villa, told reporters that the player was ambushed by criminals around 20 hours, sustaining life‑threatening injuries before being rushed to a medical centre. He added that the club received the news while Owori was still conscious.

According to the Daily Monitor, Owori was first taken to a nearby clinic and then transferred to a private facility, the Clínica Case de Kampase, where he died. Rachael Kawala, spokesperson for the local police, confirmed that investigators are pursuing leads to identify the perpetrators and that the crime scene has been documented for evidence.

The Ugandan Parliament observed a minute of silence on Wednesday in his honour and urged a swift investigation. Social‑media users and football fans alike demanded justice, amplifying the national outcry.

David Owori was born on 23 September 1998 in Tororo to Eriasaf Osinde and Bena Nyadio. He progressed through the Academia Nsambya Young Stars, the Academia de Fútbol Wembley and Lukuli United before turning professional with Vipers SC in 2016, later playing for Proline FC, Vélez CF in Spain and Utsiktens BK in Sweden. He returned to SC Villa in 2023, serving as right‑back and midfielder, captaining the side to its first league title in 20 years and the 17th first‑division championship in 2024, and secured a contract extension until January 2027.

The Federation of Associations of Uganda Football (Fufa) described Owori as a true leader on and off the pitch, while SC Villa mourned the loss of a brother and friend. The club announced a mass at San Pedro de Nsambya on Thursday and that his body will travel to Tororo for funeral rites.
