Conference League start: Ajax and FC Twente ready for first duel
The international break is over, allowing Ajax and FC Twente to now focus on their first matches in the Conference League. Both clubs qualified through the qualifying rounds and start on Thursday 15 October, each with its own opponent in the competition phase.
Dates and opponents
Ajax begins on Thursday 15 October with an away match in Croatia. Coach Míchel Sánchez leads his team at 18:45 against Hajduk Split, which also qualified through the qualifying rounds.
FC Twente also starts on Thursday 15 October, this time at home in De Grolsch Veste. John van den Brom lines up his side at 21:00 against Swiss side FC Thun.
Ajax puts Champions League winner Ter Stegen in the Johan Cruijff Arena
Unlike PSV, Feyenoord, NEC and AZ, the Amsterdam side and the Twente side have not yet played a European match this season. The mentioned clubs were already active in the Champions League or the Europa League.
The competition phases of the Champions League and the Europa League began already in September, while the Conference League starts later. Therefore Ajax and FC Twente only now have the opportunity to begin their European adventure.
With the first duels looming, both clubs hope to make a strong start and hold their own in the European tournament. A good performance can lay the foundation for further progress in the group stage.
