Cole: City appeal could decide title race

Joe Cole, three‑time Premier League winner with Chelsea, says Manchester City’s appeal of the Premier League’s guilty verdict could decide the title race. The former England midfielder believes City will clinch the championship only if the appeal succeeds, otherwise Arsenal will finish on top.

Commission finds over 100 breaches

An independent commission concluded that Manchester City breached financial regulations more than 100 times between 2009 and 2018. The report accused the club of arranging sham contracts and using sham agreements to inflate revenues and cut costs, breaches that span a decade of financial activity.

City files appeal at Etihad

City officials confirmed they lodged an appeal at the start of the month, arguing the commission’s ruling contains clear material errors of law, principle and fact and is unsafe. The club also submitted a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence to support its position, and its legal team insists the evidence will overturn the sanctions and restore the club’s financial standing.

Title race hinges on appeal

Since the verdict, Manchester City have lost two of their five league games, including a 2‑1 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday – their first Premier League loss of the season. Despite that, they remain joint‑top of the table with defending champions Arsenal after eight matches, sharing an identical record. The legal battle now adds a decisive dimension to a competition already decided on the pitch.

Arsenal endured a 3‑0 shock loss at Brighton before the international break, but rebounded with three consecutive league victories and a hard‑fought 2‑2 draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Those performances have kept the Gunners level with City on points after eight games, preserving their joint‑top status.

Speaking on The Dressing Room podcast after the weekend’s results, Cole said: “I think Arsenal. If Manchester City’s lawyers go to work, they win the league. The lawyers are the most important people in this right now! If not it’s Arsenal and everyone else is just catching up.” His comments underline the legal battle’s weight on the championship.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher echoed the sentiment, telling that Arsenal are favourites given the uncertainty surrounding City. He noted that talks about signing Vinicius Junior or Julian Alvarez never materialised, leaving Arsenal without a true game‑changer, but still possessing the best squad in the country.

Arsenal’s next Premier League test is a daunting trip to Liverpool on Sunday, while Manchester City host in‑form Brighton at the Etihad the day before. Both fixtures arrive before the appeal hearing, meaning the clubs will know their league positions ahead of any legal resolution.
