Chelsea lose Joao Pedro for weeks with thigh injury

Chelsea will be without one of their most influential attackers for several weeks, manager Xabi Alonso confirmed on Thursday. The Brazilian forward Joao Pedro has suffered a thigh injury and the club will not speculate on the exact duration of his absence. Alonso added that the Blues must be ready for tomorrow’s League Cup tie against Liverpool.
The Blues have been prolific in front of goal this campaign, netting seventeen Premier League goals – the third‑best tally in the division at present. Joao Pedro accounts for five of those strikes and has also contributed three assists, underlining his importance to Chelsea’s attack.
Pedro’s injury meant he missed the weekend trip to Tottenham, a match Chelsea lost 2‑0. The visitors managed only a single shot on target in the defeat, highlighting the void left by the Brazilian’s absence.
Alonso elaborated, “Yes, he has an injury on his thigh and he is going to be out for a few weeks. Let’s see how many, we don’t want to predict on that. He is a key player. We will miss him, but we will have to be ready to deal with the injury and to be competitive and to try to win games with the players that we have available.”
Cup game hit by absences
Cole Palmer also joins Pedro on the injury list for the League Cup clash with Liverpool on Wednesday. The forward was dismissed after receiving two yellow cards against Tottenham – the first for a clash with Mateus Fernandes, the second for stepping on Conor Gallagher’s boot.
Palmer’s suspension will force Liverpool to adjust their attacking options, as he had scored twice off the bench against Leeds in the previous round and was in contention for a start against higher‑rated opposition.
Welbeck steps up
Nevertheless, Pedro’s absence may not be the biggest concern for Chelsea in the cup, as Danny Welbeck delivered a brace in the last round after being deployed as the lone striker. The English forward’s performance suggests the Blues have alternatives up front while they await the return of their key Brazilian.
