Coach Wiegman extends contract until Euro 2029, continues building the Lionesses

England must maintain its position as a leading women’s football team, and the extension of Sarina Wiegman’s contract through Euro 2029 provides continuity in the coaching philosophy. The English FA has once again confirmed the Dutch success coach as head coach of the national women’s team.
Contract and ambitions
Wiegman, who has been voted FIFA‑coach of the year five times, said in a press release: “I am extremely happy that I may continue with this squad. I could not wish for a better job in the football world.” The extension guarantees her presence with the Lionesses throughout the qualification‑ and tournament phases until 2029.
The coach emphasises her desire to contribute to the “valuable work that the English football association (FA) does for women’s football, especially in the development of young players and coaches.” This focus aligns with the strategic goal of allowing young talent to break through.
Wiegman previously won the Euro in 2022 and 2025 with England, after a Euro victory in 2017 with the Netherlands. She also reached five consecutive finals of major tournaments, underscoring her reputation as a “success coach.”
Currently, full attention is on qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. Wiegman said: “Hopefully we succeed in that and can give the country another unforgettable summer next year.” The Lionesses face Ukraine in the decisive play‑off round.
The coach hopes for revenge for the silver medal at the 2023 World Cup, where Spain won 1‑0, and recalls the second place in 2019, when the Netherlands lost 2‑0 to the United States.
