City win fuels Inter optimism while Chivu flags right‑back emergency

Inter coach Cristian Chivu contrasted the optimism sparked by a penalty‑shootout victory over Manchester City in the opening match of their summer tour with the stark reality that his side still lacks a quality right‑back, urging a measured purchase despite the hopeful momentum.

The win, secured on penalties against Manchester City, was the first of three fixtures on the tour and marks only the beginning of Inter’s preparation. It has been described as a very fought match, underscoring the competitive level of the opposition.

“We must grow in condition and improve further,” Chivu told the players, stressing the need to raise physical standards. He said the squad must continue to develop its fitness throughout the pre‑season.

Chivu added that Inter had delivered an excellent first half and that the young players had tasted high‑level football, proving they can compete against top‑class opponents. The performance, he noted, showed the potential of the emerging talent.

Addressing the right‑back issue, Chivu labelled it an “Emergency on the right?” and outlined the current options. Inter possess three full‑backs and a midfield alternative, with Carlos ready to fill the role and Luis Henrique capable of operating on both flanks.

He warned that the transfer market remains long and that patience is essential. The club must choose the right player rather than rush a purchase, he insisted.

Looking ahead to the Australian leg of the tour, Chivu highlighted the importance of staying healthy and avoiding injuries, especially given the long August journeys. The primary objective, he said, is to finish the pre‑season without any setbacks.

Speaking of veteran Dejan Stankovic, Chivu praised his performance, saying “He played a good game and showed it,” and lauded his commitment, quality and courage. He also pointed to the contributions of youngsters Lavelli, Bovio, Iddrissou, Mayè, Topalovic and Mosconi, noting that further improvement and patience are needed as they adapt to elite football.
