City secures Foden amid Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham chase

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball ·

Phil Foden has signed a new four‑year contract with Manchester City that runs until 2030, after Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham made approaches and Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany monitored the situation closely. The England international rebuffed every offer to remain at the Etihad Stadium, the only professional club he has ever represented. At 26, he entered the final year of his previous deal, prompting sustained external interest as clubs questioned whether the change in management at Manchester City could alter his long‑term plans.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham explored the possibility of signing Foden during the uncertainty surrounding his expiring contract. Their scouting reports and preliminary talks formed part of a broader window opened by his impending free agency.

Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany also kept a close eye on Foden, expressing a personal desire to reunite with the England international he once worked alongside at the Etihad Stadium. Kompany’s interest added a continental dimension to the transfer chatter.

Director of football Hugo Viana played a pivotal role in convincing Foden to stay, making clear in discussions that the midfielder would remain a central figure in Manchester City’s next era. Viana’s reassurance gave the player confidence to reject the approaches.

The arrival of Enzo Maresca as manager further tipped the balance, with Maresca making a personal phone call to Foden. He stated on his first press conference that it was “my duty” to help the midfielder rediscover the form that earned him Premier League Player of the Season two seasons ago.

Foden’s new deal runs until 2030 and includes an option to extend by a further 12 months. Manchester City confirmed the agreement last week after terms in principle had been understood as far back as May, solidifying the club’s commitment to the Stockport‑born attacker.

Having been left out of England’s World Cup squad, Foden used the disappointment as motivation for the upcoming campaign. His decision to stay signals Manchester City’s strategy of building the next era around existing talent rather than pursuing external replacements.
