Chelsea seek right-back boost as Alonso backs Alexander-Arnold

Chelsea have signalled a serious interest in Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander‑Arnold, with manager Xabi Alonso giving his approval as the club looks to replace the injured Reece James, who is set to miss around three months after knee surgery.
Chelsea's right-back dilemma
Reece James will be sidelined for approximately three months following knee surgery. Chelsea therefore need a right‑back, with young Marco Palestra unproven, winger Pedro Neto often deployed as right wing‑back, and Malo Gusto also linked. Gusto is a target for Liverpool, who previously rejected a £75m loan deal for him.
Alexander‑Arnold has been reduced to a bit‑part role at Real Madrid, rarely leaving the bench. The club signed Denzel Dumfries over the summer, yet manager Jose Mourinho does not select him. Instead, Federico Valverde now receives the nod at right‑back, showing Mourinho’s lack of favour for Alexander‑Arnold.
The English defender once dreamed his move to Real Madrid would lead to a Ballon d’Or. In reality, he is further from that award than ever, fueling his frustration.
Reports indicate four Premier League clubs – Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea – are monitoring a possible exit. Simon Phillips a move to Stamford Bridge now appears the most likely outcome.
Financial and contractual landscape
Real Madrid originally paid just €10m for Alexander‑Arnold when he left Liverpool with a month left on his contract. The club has said it will not force him out but is willing to cash in if a suitable offer arrives. Liverpool previously quoted a £75m asking price for right‑back Malo Gusto, a figure that has since been reduced.
Xabi Alonso has publicly approved the Chelsea move, indicating a reunion with the England international at Stamford Bridge. The approval brings the transfer a step closer, though negotiations over fee and contract terms remain.
In Spain, Real Madrid are playing second fiddle to bitter rivals Barcelona, while Hansi Flick’s side dominate the domestic scene. The Champions League has offered little respite for Los Blancos over recent seasons.
