Chelsea's three‑way chase for Norwegian winger heats up

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Chelsea have entered a three‑way race to sign 22‑year‑old Norwegian winger Andreas Schjelderup from Benfica, with reports linking the Blues to Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool as they look to secure the player before the summer transfer window closes this summer.

The Blues are looking to bolster their attacking options this summer, and Schjelderup emerged as a prime target after he reacted to a World Cup quarter‑final moment in Miami Gardens. He recorded ten goals and seven assists in 43 matches for Benfica across all competitions last season. Those figures placed him among the best young wide players in the Portuguese league. The report, published by Portuguese outlet A Bola, says the Blues must compete with Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool for the Norwegian wide player.

Schjelderup’s contract with Benfica runs until the summer of 2028, meaning Chelsea would struggle to acquire him cheaply after that date. The long‑term deal underscores Benfica’s intention to retain the winger for several more seasons.

Scouting reports describe him as a good dribbler who can make driving runs, deliver killer passes in the box and shoot with power from long range. Such attributes align with Chelsea’s desire for versatile attacking talent.

Nevertheless, Schjelderup remains unproven at the highest level and would need time to adapt to life in the Premier League should the Blues secure his signature. His transition could be a key factor in determining his immediate impact.

If signed, the Norwegian talent could add quality and depth to head coach Xabi Alonso’s attack, challenge for a regular starting spot and, with his potential, become a world‑class player who helps the London giants compete across all fronts. Alonso is therefore urged to step up his efforts and secure Schjelderup before the competition intensifies further.

For Benfica, losing a winger who contributed ten goals and seven assists would be a significant blow to their attacking options. The club may need to find a replacement as they approach the 2028 contract expiry.
