Chelsea’s £54m gamble meets £75m hurdle as City chase reunion

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Manchester City, guided by new head coach Enzo Maresca, have set their sights on Portuguese winger Pedro Neto, the 26‑year‑old who joined Chelsea from Wolverhampton in August 2024 for a reported £54 million on a seven‑year contract and could bolster City’s right flank after recent departures.

Maresca, who previously managed Neto at Chelsea, views the reunion as a chance to restore a proven right‑wing partnership. The duo combined for 77 appearances, contributing 15 goals and 12 assists during their time together in London. City’s interest has been linked to the Etihad Stadium as the proposed destination.

Neto arrived at Stamford Bridge after a prolific spell in the English Championship, and his signing marked one of the club’s biggest outlays of the summer. His contract runs until June 2031, securing his long‑term stay at Chelsea.

Liverpool have been reported among the clubs interested in the winger this summer. The Portuguese international is currently on holiday after featuring for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup.

Chelsea are expected to set a hefty price tag of over £75 million, reflecting the club’s belief that the market lacks top‑quality wingers. The London side is also monitoring valuations of Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande, each listed above £100 million, after recently spending a British record £117 million on Morgan Rogers.

The high asking price could prove a stumbling block for both Manchester City and Liverpool, who are keen to add a proven Portuguese winger to their squads. Chelsea’s firm stance signals that the club will not allow a cheap departure, preferring either to retain the talent or secure a substantial profit.

For Chelsea, the demand reinforces their strategy of capitalising on recent investments, while for City the pursuit hinges on meeting the valuation or seeking alternatives. Liverpool’s interest adds further competition, meaning the final outcome will depend on whether the £75 million hurdle can be cleared.
