Chelsea's £35‑40m tag turns Liam Delap into League bargaining chip

Chelsea have placed a £35‑40 million price tag on 23‑year‑old English striker Liam Delap, making his future at Stamford Bridge uncertain and sparking interest from Premier League clubs Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United as they search for a proven goal‑scorer.

Chelsea pursued Delap last summer, paying £30 million to Ipswich Town for the Englishman after a breakout season in the top flight. The Blues outbid several rivals, most notably Manchester United, to secure his signature.

Delap’s debut season at Stamford Bridge yielded only two goals from 41 appearances, as injuries, a suspension and a role behind Joao Pedro limited his impact. The modest return fell short of the expectations that justified his initial fee.

Since Xabi Alonso took over, the club has reinforced its forward line with Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, Danny Welbeck from Brighton and the recall of Nicolas Jackson from Bayern Munich. These additions have intensified competition for the striker’s position.

Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United have all been linked with a summer move for Delap. Forest and Leeds view him as a direct rival to senior forwards Chris Wood and Dominic Calvert‑Lewin, while Everton manager David Moyes is reported to be a big fan of the English striker.

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy told Metro that Alonso will likely give Delap a chance before sanctioning any exit, noting, “there might not be other clubs who want to take them with the wages they are on or pay the fee for them.” Murphy’s comment highlights the financial considerations that could shape any transfer.

If Chelsea receive an offer within the £35‑40 million range, a sale would free wages and generate funds for further recruitment, while Delap would gain a fresh start at a club where he could compete for a regular starting role. The outcome now hinges on whether interested Premier League suitors meet the Blues’ valuation.
