Cagliari's rapid rise sets up dream clash with Manchester United

Cagliari, led by coach Secu Fabregas, will host Manchester United in the Champions League group stage on 21 September, a match the Italian side describes as a "dream come true".
Club’s meteoric ascent
Founded in 1907, Cagliari endured two bankruptcies in the past two decades and even competed in Serie D in 2019. Since the current owners took over, the club has achieved three promotions in six seasons, earning a place in Serie A for the 2024‑25 campaign.
Last season the team finished fourth, securing its first ever Champions League berth. Fabregas said the opportunity to face a "great team" like United was unimaginable when Cagliari were in Serie B just three years ago.
Despite the excitement, Fabregas warned that the club must not lose focus on Serie A, where they sit fifth, and must manage both competitions carefully.
The coach added that every day is a step in the club’s growth, emphasizing disciplined preparation ahead of the United encounter.
